Senior citizens: What were some challenges when commuting to your job during your working life?

Roland Stampley: Here's the story, so bear with me. I need help. I'm the youngest of my siblings and the only one in the city to take care of my parents. My father passed away a few months ago and I miss him dearly. My mother is still living on her own, but has to have someone to sleep with her because she's scared and not very well. She had a mini-stroke a few years ago and hasn't been the same. Anyway, I received a call this evening from my friend inviting me for an overnight stay with her kids (I have a child too). After the call, I mentioned to my mom that I felt bad that I couldn't go anywhere, even for an overnight, and asked her if this was "normal" for me. She then answered "Well, if I wasn't here, you'd be better off". Well, I started to cry and asked her why she said that. I told her that I didn't understand that comment, especially after all the times I tell her that I would miss her so much if she passed away. We do everything together and I see her every day ! so that she doesn't feel alone. I'm still in tears and she's in the living room. I don't know what to do or say. After the comment, I added that such a comment made me feel guilty more than anything. I told her that never again was I going to mention an offer to go away for an overnight. Even if I asked my siblings to come and stay with her, she'd feel like a burden so there's no way out of this. She said "Just wait until you arrive at my age, you'll know how it feels.". I'm already afraid to grow old and this is making me sick to my stomach. What to do now?...Show more

Miguel Densley: Riding my Trek bicycle Home 16 miles from work up a wet hill just after it started to rain -- and cars passing me going slow -- Because they know who I am -- they have seen me riding my Trek all over town

Samara Siewers: I saw that on this mornings, news also. What a scare thatlady got! Well naturally living up north, I wouldn't find anythingso threatening in my kitchen. But I ha! ve lived in Phoenix andhad several meeces in the back of a sto! ve, that dared tocome out at night. And then last year we had a mouse makeit's way in from an area in the ceiling where they had madean opening. He and I had our meeting, when I was in thebathroom and he pushed the door open just a little with his nose. I thought it was our little toy Chihuahua and openedthe door fast. And there was the tiny mouse. I screamed and he ran back to the kitchen. It was there we found the hole inthe ceiling where he'd dropped down. And that's as big of a critter, I ever hope to see....Show more

Hong Hunkin: Sleet and snow on occasion. Thankfully I was only 7 miles away, and could use residential/side streets all the way. Down here in Texas we are generally all idiots when it comes to driving on that. I remember my first snow storm while living in the Detroit area back in '77. It was so bad, they let us off work at about mid morning. My first experience driving in that. At the time, I had a '65 Mustang and had just moved up north. I c! rept along and it was ok till I would get stuck at the red lights. Couldn't get traction to continue on. But not to worry, people jumped out of their cars and would give me a push. I finally got home and waited for my hubby to make it as well. We exchanged horror stories of the commute. I told him how helpful and friendly the people here were. He laughed and said, "They saw your Texas plates and knew you were an idiot driver in the snow. They just wanted you out of the way so they could get home." I kept my plates as long as possible (in case of more storms). So, when the weather eased up, we "winterized" my car. From then on I had snow tires, chains, shovel, a sleeping bag, bags of sand in the trunk for ballast, and so forth....Show more

Floy Fague: Once in a while it snowed. That screwed up traffic for everyone. Seemed as if everybody in town forgot how to drive in snow, every week!! I cycled 19 miles, to work a lot. Freezing weather was a challenge. Later ! when they moved my job across the country, I had a five hour commute by! airplane. I commuted on week ends, staying near work during the week. Riding "space available" was worse than riding in the back of a red neck's pick-up, or in a box car.

Ulrike Hert: Neutrogena Pore refining cleanser, and Neutrogena lotion SPF for facePerfume-Elizabeth ArdenMake-Up I prefer ArbonneSkin Softener-Vitamin E Lotion

Dawn Saha: This is hard to believe, but I just read this story about an 8-foot alligator that made it's way into a lady's kitchen in Florida. Have you ever found anything unexpected in your kitchen?http://www.abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=4708496

Veta Slicker: Based on ice cream consumption figures, the top five individual flavors in terms of share of segment in the United States are: vanilla (26%), chocolate (12.9%) neapolitan (4.8%) strawberry (4.3%) cookies n' cream (4.0%) and I love chocolate icecream from the limited choices given. If there were other choices I would have selected some other flavour. However, in most regular r! estaurants the choice you are given are very limited and it would be the 3 flavours you have given so I think you did good. There are too many flavours and variations (like personalities) so the 3 basic classic ones are a good idea. However, the chocolate personality did not match mine. I am not reserved, very chatty, open, friendly, outgoing, yes, love art, not sure about Indie Rock.

King Bringle: I use the inexpensive Oil of Olay moisturizer with sunscreen each day. Like you, I use Cover Girl makeup but prefer the liquid type. I'm not very fancy. Buy my beauty products at the discount store. My favorite perfume is White Diamonds. My children buy me gifts of the sweet smelling bath products from Bath & Body. I like those too.

Caterina Yeargan: In the mid 1990's we moved to Hawaii on the Big Island.I am a cosmetologist and took exams special to Hawaii to be legal to work in that state.Hilo where we lived at the time had very few beauty salons, there were ! a few barber shops where I called seeking work but the owners only spok! e Japanese, not for me.I noticed a tiny wooden building about 90 mins. away from our home that looked cute and friendly. Was getting desperate to work.I called the shop up and got hired over the phone. It was a 90 min. drive each way over a winding dangerous 2 lane road which usually had rain and drivers with missing head lights who were half drunk or high.No shops for miles between small towns and although we bought a huge portable style cell phone there still was no phone service in many places along the way, If I had broken down I would have to rely on passers by for help.I worked with the best boss ever but spending 3 or more hours just driving 4 days a week got to me after 5 months. She was really cool had a tiny cottage on her land where I could of stayed on my work days but being married with a family it was not an option for me.These days I have heard that Hilo has many more salons and even a Walmart! When I was a fresh 20 year old we moved to NYC. I had a job working! near the garment district on 34th st.We lived in Flatbush in Brooklyn. My husband was to pick me up after I got off at 4 am. One night the alarm was not set and he never came to get me. I was so scared and angry, never took a subway by myself before and at 4 am in NYC it was something. I did it but had eyes everywhere, so many drunk passed out men riding at that time of night, boy my husband got a chewing out that time!...Show more

Hilton Paiva: Just wondering, and thanks. I use mango-cocoa butter lotion (cheap) on my face and it seems to work as well as anything. I use Cover Girl cream type make up.

Mikel Bethay: The worst I've ever found was a bowl of dried out, hardened, greenish-gray, homemade playdough with two of my spoons stuck in the glop. My daughters had made some homemade playdough, stuck it under the sink, and forgot about it. I found it a couple weeks after they had made it.The story you linked to has been on the news quite a bit around here. I li! ve about 80 miles from the lady who had the gator in her kitchen. Ahhhh! , spring time in Florida, where gator mating season can lead to unexpected house guests. I guess that gator was "looking for love in all the wrong places"....Show more

Marquetta Gimm: I love the old standard, Chanel #5. I have a small bottle that I use on special occasions. I use Elizabeth Arden face cream because I can get it for a very good price at Costco. And I use Elizabeth Arden foundation, MAC cream blush, and drug store mascara.

Vince Delarge: My first marriage was a real bummer. My Husband at that time would get in my purse and take all my money. I worked nights and would come home and go to sleep. I would try to find places where I could hide my purse and it would be safe. I came up with the perfect place,I thought , The oven. This was fine until My husband decides to cook (Never did cook before) biscuits and turned the oven on to pre heat. The smell was unbelievable, molten plastic, melted lipstick, Credit cards , money, Jewelry, plastic wallet,The p! urse just melted. Ever thing ! and it was plastic. He called the fire Dept. and they came out and pulled it from the oven and sprayed down the oven and kitchen. What a mess. I had a hard time explaining why my purse was in the oven in the first place. Never, never hide your purse in the oven....Show more

Adrian Paraz: I remember when they were building the BART. I just got out of high school. The city has never been the same since. I lived in S.F. during my first job at 18, just took the streetcar downtown. One could go home in the dark alone then.

Darrin Hixenbaugh: By the way, my child is the one sleeping with her every night to make sure she's ok.

Leann Villalta: I didn't have any. My first "real" job was in Washington DC which, in the 1960s, had a great bus system and I'm sure it still does. When I lived in California I carpooled - lived about 20 minutes from work. In Michigan I either drove myself or was in carpools - also about a 20 minute commute.! I always chose to live within a 20 to 30 minute ride from wherever it! was I worked (rented apartments) and I always made sure I lived on a busline. For two years in my early 20s I lived in an apartment which was about a 20 to 30 minute walk from work and I walked to/from work every day for two years - was in great shape then. I can remember snow on my eyelashes freezing sometimes and once or twice falling and sliding down the block to work (it was very hilly). Very invigorating....Show more

Davida Gisriel: My favorite (and only) perfume is ..... Falling in Love. by Philosophy.(Not crazy about the name - but love the scent.)For special occasions I can become a real girly-girl.I use Bare Escentuals eye and face makeup, Joan Rivers lipstick.I don't use face creams. Occasionally a body cream.

Raymundo Kyser: The last 28 years of my work life I lived about a 2 minute walk from my job.

Vernon Martorana: I love the smell of Jergens and cocoa butter. Don't use perfumes because I get migraines. Wear very little makeup. maybelli! ne mascara and a little eye liner.

Nedra Oltz: I've never found anything odd in my kitchen, but my step-grandmother did. She used to buy in large quantities because she had so many children. She had a large container of molasses and found "a man's thumb" in it. Guess an accident happened at the factory. We had a squirrel come down our chimney, but it never got in the kitchen. We had a bat in the house once. It hid behind the bookshelf, but it never went into the kitchen. We also had a ringtail in the attic, and we had some swifts come down our chimney and fly around in the house (we're in the country, so get lots of animals)....Show more

Blaine Connett: I use products I find at the local grocery store and drug store. That would be Dove, Jergens and Olay. I don't like anything that feels greasy on my skin, but that just hasn't been a problem for several years. I currently have a Maybelline (water based) cream foundation but I'm getting curious about thos! e new brush on mineral make-ups now that Avon has it at a price I can a! fford. I almost never use perfumes because I have a poor sense of smell. I worry about overdoing it.

Emeline Albracht: I like a subtle scent. In fact, most days I use an after bath body spray by Calgon. I think I pay less than $5 for it. I work with a lady who sells Mary Kay products, so I switch back and forth from Mary Kay to Cover Girl. I've used Cover Girl since I was a young girl.

Faviola Dewire: We had been in our new house just a few days back in 1964. One night I opened a cupboard door and let out a scream which could have awakened the whole neighborhood. There on the bottom shelf was a lizard. It was about a foot long and as ugly as sin. We had no idea how it got in the house. I am certain it was not a pet of the previous owners. Thank heavens my husband was there to remove it. I hadn't thought about this in years until I read about that alligator in the newspaper this morning....Show more

Maynard Reevers: My biggest challenge was man! y feet of snow, icy roads, and white outs.

Buddy Ardd: Okay, but you were the one that got upset twice, first when you couldn't go stay the night with someone, and second when your mom said that. Don't worry so much. You are being too sensitive. Just love her the way she is.

Gaston Edgcomb: The same as for Kate....icy highways, drifted snow and white outs made it scary for driving sometimes.

Arnulfo Seegars: Now I'm definitely not going on this trip. I feel it's just been ruined.

Dee Depung: In 1962 at 15 I walked 2 miles to work every day.Since then living in a rural area I have never travelled less than an hour in 40 years. Seem to have spent half my life in a car.UK

Darcie Peraha: Rainbow, I am so sorry that your trip was ruined but in the future you will have to measure your words more carefully. I don't think it is the stroke that has her fearful, it is the loneliness. When my dad passed away and my mom was afraid of being by herself! all of a sudden she was even afraid to drive. She wanted me to drive ! her everywhere. But because I had a stroke, my daughter and my mothers neighbors and eventually the senior center in her neighborhood ended up being her transport to everything. Eventually she stopped driving all together.Try to get her involved in the local senior center activities, even if it is just her having lunch there. They usually have a whole calendar of things going on and you can sign up for these through you local parks and recreation dept....Show more

Darrel Stele: A sad story - and all too real and believable. You are deprived of a day off/activity that you would normally be able to pursue and your mom feels like she is preventing you [ which is the truth ] and feels horrible about it. Things will get back to normal, just smooth them out if brought up again and learn to be careful abt what you say and confide to your mom. If you want a day off, arrange beforehand for someone else to stay if possible.Yes, the trip has been ruined. Happened for me with! my mom too a couple of times. I learned that I had to really measure my words, keeping things only positive, not telling some things for her own good and both of our sanity. It is not easy to reach this point w/a parent, where you have to be dishonest with them at times, but it does often become necessary......Show more

Coy Tapley: I started my first job in 1958 and had to walk to work because the first bus of the day would not get me there in time. I have never had a car so am always dependent on buses - many of which seem to run late so I sometimes miss appointments or arrive late. Fortunately none of those appointments are for job interviews these days. It is good when one lives within walking distance of work because we save petrol costs and parking costs and don't have to worry about buses or trains running late. The walkers are usually the best time keepers....Show more

Angelyn Ducas: The strangest thing I ever unexpectedly found in my kitchen was, M! y naked husband frying bacon. He had on the big long oven mitts and a ve! ry determined look. Can't help lovin that man o minePeace...Show more

Monroe Rainey: It wasn't my kitchen, but our landlady's kitchen. She was always misplacing her purse, and we were often asked to help her find it (if we didn't help, she'd accuse us of stealing it) ... and I found it behind a full freezer of meats ... she'd put it in accidentally and then didn't notice it when she was putting the meat into the freezer. We also found it sitting behind her toilet a few times ... she'd put the toilet paper away, set it down and shoved it back with her foot to put a new roll on, and ... she was a kick to be a tenant of, but I'm glad our present landlady is rarely home and has all of her memory! I'm older now, and sometimes lose my own coin purse ... but NEVER find it in the kitchen, because I have the good sense not to ever take it in there ... the kitchen is the size of a postage stamp anyway, and it can't hold everything as it is ... so 'losing' something there woul! d be even worse!...Show more

Arlen Decorte: My favorite fragrance is Jessica McClintock. Or Inish, a similar fragrance with just a slight hint of sandalwood.Make Up? Usually Max Factor or Revlon.Skin care? Oil of Olay Regenerist.

Chauncey Williama: I read about the alligator and felt how fortunate that lady was not to have been hurt. The strangest thing I have found is some yogurt in my cupboard. I must have had a true senior moment and forget it went in the refrigerator.

Anibal Scheid: I started my first full time job when I was discharged from the military in late 1972, and had a 18 mile commute each way. I left a half-hour before my starting time each day, and was at my desk when I was supposed to start at 8:00AM. I always drove to work, and never used mass transportation. Parking was provided so I never had to pay to park in a garage or a lot, and the only tolls I had was when I was visiting customers, and I put those on my expense report.

Bai! ley Lares: yes, that aligator made it's way thru her patio door screen ! and into her kitchen. It's aligator mating season here. We have an aligator out back in the manmade lake (retention pond) and it's been there about 4 years now and comes out to sun itself on hot days. Twice I've asked for it to be removed but (even though it's ok to remove them if they are 4 feet long or more, by trappers of course) the apartment office refused and said if they aren't hurting anyone then we can't remove it. (geez, that might be too late since there have been two incidents already of small dogs being eaten). I remember...when I first came to Florida and I had my two cats with me and they were keeping patrol around the refrigerator, even at night. The person upstairs apparently had a gerbul who somehow got between the walls and was boring a hole above our refrigerator so my cats heard the boring. But then then next time I looked up the hole had been made and the poor gerbul was trapped under the refrigerator. I called the health department because I di! dn't at the time know it was a gerbul. We opened the patio doors and chased it out with a broom. Because I called the health department it was "I" who got the boot from the apartment for calling the health department.last summer my cat was chasing a little lizzard around the bathroom for several days. Poor lizzard was without a tail, that must be frightening to the lizzard. Who knows where he went, as long as it's not in here....Show more

Burt Cheevers: Hermes Caleche I have worn for thirty years but I have just found Prada d'Iris which is just lovely.Any old thing that I find cheap and cheerful for my face - aint nothing gonna help this outdoor girl too much! And make up is a smear of lippy and a smudge (literally!) of mascara!I am NOT in case you are confused - a super model!

Lino Cawthorne: I had made hot soapy dishwater and was letting the dishes soak while I finished some other house work..A while later I put my hands in the dishwater to grab an item and! pulled out a small MOUSE!! After my initial scream that Im sure the ne! ighbors heard, I scooped the mouse out with paper towels, told it that's what it deserved for going swiming without a life preserver and proceeded to drain the water and rewash everything in scalding soapy bleach water! It wasn't like having a gator in the kitchen, but for me the mouse was just as bad! My daughter loaned me her cat for a couple days afterward to help me find where the mice were coming in and then my landlord came over to seal the openings, so I hope thats the end of that!...Show more

Morris Olexy: "a certain age"=mature; no longer an ingenue ( ha ha... like me) I think the term originated in France.

Vernon Martorana: Many years I didn't have a car so my ex would drop me at work very early then pick me up he would usually work about 6-2:30 when I worked 8-4:30 so drop off at 5:30 wait 2.5 hours to start work. Tax season I worked overtime in the early morning since I was already there. He always had to wait for me 1.5 hours after work. The worst w! as when I had a broken leg and worked 6AM to 2PM. I called to check the bus schedule since I couldn't drive and they wanted me to walk 2 miles to catch a bus at 5:30 AM go down town, transfer to a suburb and catch another bus to another suburb then walk a mile. If I could walk several miles twice a day with a broken leg I would have been over 2 hours late to work every single day. I had to miss 6 weeks work from poor bus service....Show more

Eva Lichlyter: Before marriage it was just me...drive in, work, go home. After marriage I spent a lot of time in the car.....but our two work schedules were perfect....we'd get up early, feed/dress the baby...then I'd drop him at work, take the baby to the sitter then go to my job. Do the reverse in the afternoon....our job times were a hour different so I had the time to do the running about.

Robin Marchione: Ohhhhhh, yes! In the early 80's I lived in a log house in the county that had "loose ends" unfinishd. like a small h! ole under the kitchen sink beside the plumbing pipe that went under the! house. I opened the door to drop something into a small trash can and jumped straight up and back in horror!A small snake hung over the edge of the can. Tha hole was caulked before the sun went down .Juju...Show more
