I need help.. My car makes a weird sound from under the hood!?

King Bringle: open the hood while the car is running and then you might be able to decipher where the noise is actually coming formcould be a clutch pulley

Jerrod Guilfoil: If you can't figure it out yourself standing right there at the car, how do you expect someone on a computer to answer it. Good gosh...open the hood,if you know how, and LOOK!!!

Clark Lachowski: Is someone in there? Do you stand outside there while it's running or moving ? Not much info

Judie Kise: lol, there are around 160 moving parts in a typical 4 cyl engine.... this doesnt include heat sheilds that could come loose, saging exhaust systems that hit the body, worn motor mounts, etc.is the sound only when your idling, or does it go away, only because you are moving and cant hear it?does it sound like thin metal is hitting something... kinda with an echoing sound... is the sound you hear a ping... like someone taking a small hammer and hitting the thick piece of metal, or is it a po! ng.... someone taking a big hammer and hitting a thick peice of metal?when it hits the other piece, does it make a grinding noise?when was the last time your car had a tuneup? when was the last time basic maintenance was performed? what year and model is your car? if your car is 35 years old and has rust.. thats probably where you would want to start looking.if you have a 4cyl engine with the exhaust manifold coming from the rear, it wouldnt make a louder noise then in the front. If you have a damaged turbo, you could get this noise.if its a 10 yr old 150,000 mile car, the sound youre hearing could be engine knock caused by carbon buildup, but if your car is 3 yrs old 25,000 miles , theres no reason why it would have an engine knock due to carbon.obviously the first thing you should do, is determine what type of sound its making. if its a ping grinding, it could be a worn motor mount, if its a ping vibrate, then it could be a loose heatshield, if its a pong vibrate, it coul! d be a bad cat converter... but if you have a 30 yr old car, t! his wouldnt be the problem.in conjunction with the first item listed, take a rubber mallet, and with the car off, start lightly tapping things underneath it... you want to see if you can replicate the sound with the car off, because this would determine if its an engine problem.hit the aluminum heat shields above the exhaust system. many newer cars have heat shields on the exhaust manifold, and they are only spot welded, and these break easily. These normally make a ping echo noise. Tap the exhaust pipes... once youve determined that its nothing but engine/transmission related, you move on from there.if its a tick tick tick, this is carbon buildup (90% of the time). You would want to do an oil flush. it cleans out most of the carbon, so it wont tick as loud.do this and then tell us if you still have problems....Show more

Lita Thammorongsa: Need more info but sounds like might be rod out of it and piston hitting head... Bad news man sorry

Christiane Cattano: ! till i understand what it rather is, yeah. One night i replaced into coming abode from artwork my good front tire began making this strange clunking noise and that i could not' pass very speedy or the motor vehicle might commence shaking so once I have been given abode I regarded and there replaced into basically one nut retaining the full tire on and something of the lug nuts have been in the hubcap
