Coleen Carignan: This is a current problem for a lot of people. There are other formulations-Westhroid and Naturethroid, but there has been some availability problems with them also. Some compounding pharmacies still have the ingredients and can make. It has been stated that because of shortages, the US Gov't has set aside the restrictions on ordering from Canada for their ERFA thyroid and people are getting it sent in from Canadian suppliers. I've gotten this from following posts on Yahoo's group 'Iodine'. IMO, your dad! would benefit from Iodine in addition to his thyroid medication, and there is much good info on this group, whose owner is also a survivor of thyroid removal due to cancer.Blessings to you and your dad....Show more
Toshia Metzker: My husband and I both took Armour Thyroid until it became unavailable here in the US. We now take the Canadian version, simply called "Thyroid", made by Erfa. We purchase it from Universal Drugstore (UniversalDrugstore.com) and they have always been extremely helpful. All we needed to supply was a prescription from our doctor (they will accept prescriptions written for "Armour Thyroid"), which we faxed to them after a short phone call. We have found that the Canadian Thyroid works just as well as the Armour and it is not expensive. If your dad has had good luck with Armour, please consider staying with one of the natural thyroid meds - either Naturethroid, Westhroid (both of these are in short supply in the US), or the Canadian Thyroid - an! ything but Synthroid!Hope this helps. Norris Rosener: Without a gland your dad will need another source for hormone. The Armour has been that source.... there are other brands of natural thyroid hormone than Armour brand.NaturthroidWesthroidErfaThyroid-Sand you can have capsules made at a compounding pharmacy.There have been shortages and backorders of natural thyroid products, shipments are slowly starting up again and we are hopeful that supplies will build again.He'll need to talk with his doc and local pharmacy to find an alternate brand/source for his replacement hormone.As necessary is at is for him to have replacement hormone, he isnt' going to collapse to the floor if he runs our and time is needed to get more.. He wil! l likely have hypo symptoms start to build, feeling more sluggish, etc.... You won't need to run around in sheer panic... just get busy finding an alternative source of any of the brands I listed above.... If all else fails have him talk with his doc about using Synthetic T3 as a short term fill in until a new source for whole gland can be found.Going to synthetic T4 won't work as well due to his body being used to a source of T3 as well.. there will be an adjustment phase as his body adjusts to T4 only replacement and will need to redetermine how much to convert....Show more
